Regardless of the field and profession, America’s innovation landscape has been one of the best in the world. The nation owes its gratitude in part to its 228-year-old patent system and in part to the phenomenal contributions of African American inventors. Not only have they consistently participated in paving new roads of success in technology and academics, but they have also stood unshakable in front of the long odds handed down by racial oppression. In fact, their contributions have proven to be significant in the story of scientific advancement as well as into a larger history of racial liberation.
While the U.S. patent law was established with color-blind criteria to foster innovation, the truth is that the black inventors have remain woefully underrepresented in this system. However, the least we can do to breathe a new life into the black history is to to honor these individuals not just in February, the Black History month, but throughout the year.
This book is a celebration of the influence that can be every day through their inventions that have changed how we work and play. More than anything, let’s learn to preach equality and acceptance in a world where it is easy to spread maximum of hatred for a minimum of reason!
